A Path Amidst Obstacles

You may be at a time in your life that you find yourself having recurrent thoughts about your future transition from practice. They will probably range from specific ideas to some that are still vague. You may consider this for awhile and perhaps come to realize that a very long time has gone by without a clear idea of what to do, how or when. Yet, the challenge remains.

You are not alone in this experience. It’s common.

At some point, there will arise from within you a powerful desire to act, to move forward and do what needs to be done to prepare yourself and your practice. Hopefully, it’s not too late to achieve your desired optimal outcome.

What to Do When

Over time, you will be able to reach some conclusions, such as when you want to stop practicing, what do to do afterwards, what to do about your practice and much more.

You’ll probably realize that the answers are often tentative because there’s much you still do not know about this unfamiliar transition process. It’s usually the case that the deeper you delve into the issues, the more questions will arise that are increasingly difficult to answer, at least initially.

The Travails of Inertia

The earliest phase of preparation for your career transition is developing your commitment to begin.  This can be the most difficult step. Why is that?

There are three major reasons within The Universe of the Unfamiliar:

  • You are not clear on your goals.
  • The transition process is unfamiliar.
  • The future is unknown.

The first two can be overcome by learning, preparation and execution.

As to the third, you cannot predict the future. However, with proactive preparation, you can accomplish a great deal to create it.

The First Step

You have to determine What you want and When you wish to achieve it. This foundation is your Post Career Lifestyle Plan.

The Second Step

Create your Post Career Financial Plan in consultation with a Certified Financial Planner to determine whether or not your desired lifestyle can be supported by your financial assets.

The Third Step

You must learn and master the process of your transition…the How. You do so by creating and executing a plan for your practice, the End of Career Transition Plan.

Please see a previous article that describes these in more detail.

One More Step…

You’ll find that once you commit to learning and peeling away the veils of the obscure, you'll feel much more confident as you develop your plans. The methodology is to proceed in a natural, logical manner that provides the means to dream of and create the future lifestyle you desire.
