“Ready” – 2017

Am I Really Ready?
A date may be set and the plans are in place. Yet, as that day draws near, professionals may discover an inner hesitance they didn’t expect. It isn’t about finances, logistics, or timing. It’s about emotional readiness.
No matter how well things are arranged on paper, emotional readiness resides in a different place. It’s the quiet voice that asks: Is this the right time? What will life look like without what I’ve always known? And perhaps most poignantly: Am I prepared to let go?
Transition Isn’t Just a Change, It’s a Process
We often approach career transitions like a project to manage: timeline, tasks, goals. But this isn’t just about leaving a role. It’s about stepping out of a rhythm that shaped your identity, relationships, and expressed your sense of purpose for decades.
Emotional readiness acknowledges that letting go of something familiar, even something you’re ready to release, evokes emotions of anticipation, relief, doubt, and grief.
You’re not weak for feeling unsettled. You’re human.
Grief Can Hide in Progress
Even when transition is voluntary and planned, a subtle form of grief may surface. You may find yourself more irritable, tired, or unmotivated. Or you may feel strangely numb.
This grief isn’t a sign of failure, it’s a signal of significance. It means that what you built mattered and is worth honoring.
Readiness includes space to feel the weight of what’s ending, not to dwell in it, but to progress through it with care.
Emotions Don’t Follow a Schedule
You may find yourself questioning your decision even after you’ve made it. That doesn’t mean you’ve chosen wrong. It means your emotions are catching up to a change that your intellect already accepted.
Emotional transitions don’t always align with timelines. They unfold gradually, often in waves. Making room for those waves helps reduce the effects of their undertow.
Readiness Is Not Certainty. It’s Willingness.
It’s easy to think we should feel completely sure before making a change this big. But emotional readiness is not about complete confidence, it’s about willingness.
Willingness to feel uncertain. Willingness to not know everything. Willingness to explore the future lifestyle you are creating.
This kind of readiness doesn’t shout. It whispers, I don’t know exactly what’s next, but I’m open to finding out.
You’re Not Alone at This Unsettled Time
If you feel unsure, resistant, or emotional, even after months or years of preparation, keep in mind that this is natural and common.
Many professionals experience an internal dissonance between what they planned with the best of expectations and what they feel. This isn’t a problem to fix. This is an element of the process. Treat it with a healthy dose of understanding, optimism, and patience.
Sharing these feelings with others in transition, with trusted confidants, or through reflective writing can soften the anxiety and bring unexpected clarity.
Acknowledge What You’re Feeling and Stay Your Course
Avoiding emotion doesn’t erase it. You don’t have to rush. But you do have to be honest, with yourself, and with the people experiencing this transition with you.
Start where you are. Feel what you feel. Let readiness emerge from the process of acknowledgement and accepting, not from perfect preparation.
A New Chapter Begins With a Deep Breath
You may never feel 100% ready. But if you’re willing to step forward, with courage, sensitivity, and respect for all that you’ve done, then you are more ready than you think.
There’s strength in recognizing the emotional truth of this moment. And there’s freedom in knowing that it’s part of the path, not a detour from it.
